Dental Insurance: Use It or Lose It!

Family Dentist East Point GA 30344 | Dental Insurance: Use It or Lose It!

Don't throw away your money or your chance to smile! Waiting to get even basic dental treatment is silly because dental problems only worsen over time. This, however, is not the only reason that you should use your dental benefits before the calendar year ends. Apart from preventing larger dental problems, when you put your dental insurance to work on a regular basis it ensures you get the most out of the plan.

The reason you should consider getting your treatments done before the end of the calendar year also has to do with your benefit deadline. Here is what we mean:

You probably enrolled in your dental insurance plan at the same time you enrolled in your health plan. The plan renews on that same date, which may not be precisely in line with the calendar. Does this mean that the dental plan “rolls over” at the same time too? For many cases, the answer is just plain “no”.

Just consider:

  • Most insurance companies have a benefit deadline of December 31, and this means that any of your unused benefits don’t roll over into the new year. So, if your insurance plan will pay for roughly one thousand dollars of treatments each calendar year, and you haven’t used this amount by the end of the year, you LOSE IT.
  • Most dental insurance plans come with what is known as a deductible. This is the dollar amount you must spend before the coverage “kicks in”. It will include fees that you pay for treatments and any out of pocket costs you have paid too. If you have reached this amount and not booked an appointment for covered treatments, it is the same as tossing away the savings you would have enjoyed through the coverage.
  • Many dental care providers increase the cost of treatments at the turn of the calendar year. Just like everything else in the world, dental care is dealing with rising costs. If you wait until after the beginning of the year to get treatment, it is likely that you will pay more.

Now is the time to get any treatments done that you may have been “holding off on”. It is best to use remaining benefits before the end of the year because your benefit maximum is likely to end on December 31, and you don’t want to start the New Year at a loss because you waited.
